Synthetic Oil Questions

Greetings All,

I have a 2003 Nighthawk 750 with 15000 miles. I'm consiedring switching to synthetic oil.

1. What should I look for in a SYN. oil (certifications, brands, etc)?

2. Are there any characteristics about a SYN. oil that I should avoid?

3. Outside of draining the old oil, replacing the filter and filling with SYN. oil, is there anything else I must do?

4. Is there any reason that switching to SYN. oil is a bad idea?

Thanks in advance,
Mark in Indiana

Since things are so slow here, check this thread on another Nighthawk Forum, and ask your question there is need be.

I myself switched to a synthetic blend which is a mixture of synthetic and conventional and i used the honda brand. You have to make sure it has no moly in it which honda does have one without. The moly will eat up your clutch discs and cause it to start slipping. The one by honda without moly will work great and does no harm. Once you switch to synthetic though you want to stay with that and not switch back. You get better lubrication during start ups and sitting periods, runs cooler and you can get away with a little longer in between changes another 1000 miles or so but even with the synthetic doing periodic changes is always a very good idea with anything that has a motor. Clean fresh oil and filter is the cheapest best maintnance you can do for your bike. That hondaline oil is called pro4 or something like that and is 8.99 a quart here. you will need exactly three quarts with a new filter, any honda dealer will know which one it is just tell them you want syntheticblend without moly.good luck ride safe

I have been using Shell Rotella T synthetic in the blue container in my 1996 NH 750 since September 2008. My NH is my daily driver and I've put 7000 miles since Sept and done about 7 oil changes. Bike runs fine with no problems. I change the oil about ever 1000 miles. I pick the oil from Schucks for about $20.00 for 5 quarts. No clutch issues.

I use Shell Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 in my 91 NH750. The clutch works fine, the shifting is smoother, and the shifting does not deteriorate as much as the oil gets older. Finding neutral is much smoother with the Synthetic.
