Throttle cable replacement Q's

Postby downshifter on Sun Jan 11, 2009 3:59 pm

Hello all
to preface, recently picked up a '91 cb750 from a craigslist seller
bike is in great shape, today I just got done giving the whole thing a proper bath with degreaser and polish from tire to tire :D

However, noticed my throttle cable has a lot of slack -- adjuster nut at the control is all the way tight -- cable looks like the original.

I have a clymer's manual, and the manual calls for REMOVING THE AIR FILTER HOUSING to do this job, which doesn't make much sense to me since removing the carburetors shouldn't require this

can anyone clarify for me? Can I get away with this job with just removing the set, fuel tank and carbs?

thanks in advance, I just like to know ahead of time how many hours I need to set aside for jobs! (removing the air filter housing looks like it adds a lot of possibly unnecessary time)

Downshifter, you should be able to loosen the mounts on the airbox and connections at the carb and scoot the airbox back some if you need to remove the carbs.
I have'nt yet had to do this myself but it was posted on Nighthawk 750.com in the dynojet install posting.

I am wondering too. Mine has a ton of slack and would like a how-to on how to adjust them properly.

Downshifter, The Clymer manual does refer to removing the air filter housing to replace the cables. In the maintenance section the adjustment percedure is also covered and it is not necessary to remove the air filter housing. There are additional adjusters on the cable at the carb end of the cable and you will need to remove the gas tank to get to these. You should be able to remove the slack in the cable using both adjusters. When you say the adjuster is "all the way tight" are you saying that the adjuster is screwed all the way into the throttle housing or that it is screwed all the way out of the housing? To remove play in the cable the adjuster screw is turned out, counterclockwise. You do need to have about 1/4 inch of freeplay in the cable. You can check to see if you have left enough play in the cable by starting the machine and at idle move the handlebars both directions to full lock and see if you get an increase in idle speed. If you do you need to add a little more freeplay to the cable.
Best of luck,
