Problems with Luggage Rack installation

Postby jwiegele on Sat Jun 13, 2009 11:40 pm

I have a 99 Nighthawk 750. Purchased a new luggage rack/sissy bar (the Honda version), but it did not come with mounting hardware. I did a test fit today, and I ran into a few problems.

Does anyone have pictures of the spacers that are needed on the forward mounts (on the top shock bolt)? I'm going to have to purchase/fabricate something to work here. It seems that the spacer needs to be about 2 inches, which is a pretty good distance.

My biggest problem is that the tail section that must be removed to install the rack won't go back on with the rack in place. The rear mounting brackets appear to interfere with the tail section sliding far enough forward to it can be bolted back on. All 4 bolt holes on the rack line up perfectly with the mounting locations, which tells me it's the right rack. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks for the help, I would really like to get this rack mounted!

Problem solved...

okay :D I just had to think about it a little, and build up enough courage to trim the tail section, and I managed to get it on the bike tonight. The picture posted on nighthawk750.com of the "glove box" actually showed how it needed to be trimmed to fit. I picked up two bolts and a spacer with washers at Ace Hardware (total $5), used my dremel to trim the plastic on the tail piece, and I've got a luggage rack now. Took me about 90 minutes to finish, after twice taking everything apart and test-fitting it.

Glad yo got it figured out.

I see a lot of racks sold on E-Bay without the hardware, including the longer bolts needed.

If you bought it "new", it should of came with the hardware and spacers. Also should of had an instruction sheet.
