Stuck in gear after accident....help

Postby GA_RR on Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:20 pm

My brother had a little mishap this past weekend on his '91 Nighthawk. He went down in some gravel making a turn going less than 10mph on the shifter side of the bike. He thinks he may have been in 2nd gear at the time but isn't positive. The only visible damage to the bike is the shifter is bent a little. His knee and leg took a lot of the weight of the bike evidently when it went down.

Anyhow, pulling the clutch still allows the bike to roll and the shifter(and shaft) will move up and down but will not change the gears. Would really appreciate some advise as to what else we need to check and the possible problem causing this.

TIA

I am not an expert and this is not a definitive answer, but it seems to me that if the shifter lever hit hard enough to bend that the shift rod may have gotten jamed into the case hard enough to bend a shift fork or something.

Is it stuck in one gear, or does it seem like the trans is locked between gears?

I'm guessing it's actually stuck in a gear, although I'm not sure. Rolling the bike and dropping/slipping the clutch won't turn the motor over, but if it's in 1st or 2nd gear that's not really surprising. Any ideas or where to start before we just start dismantling the transmission?

Not a clue, I was hopeing one of the other members would chime in.
If you try to push start it and the back wheel just skids like the trans is locked up, then I would say something in there is definately f'ed up.
I just noticed that in your origional post you said "the shifter and shaft will move up and down but will not change the gears" Yeah, something is FUBAR in there.
If you can get hold of a shop manual it will make your work on it go a little smoother.
