Poor Gas Milage?

Postby jay2tall on Tue Dec 23, 2008 11:33 am

I've had my 92 NIghthawk 750 for about 4 years now. Prior to this year I had been getting between 40-45mpg. This year it tankd and I haven't seen 40 mpg once. It sits around 36MPG! What could be the deal with this? The introduction of ethanol in all pump gas? I am not very mechanically savy when it comes to bikes. My neighbor said I should take it into the Honda shop after the winter and have them tune it. I figured since it is sitting in the garage for the winter I have time to research. Does anyone have any advice? It has about 18,000 miles on it.

They use ethanol here in Nj and my mileage is still about 47 MPG avg.

Air filter clean? Dry?

Sometimes the drain tube from the airbox fills with water (condensation from the crankcase ventilation system). It needs to be drained now and again. The water is normal, but letting it fill up and wet the air filter can cause issues.

Has it been tuned in the last four years? You may need plugs. The electronic ignition, if not touched, will not change timing, so it usually isn't that.

Also, I am usually against "Mechanic in a Can" products, but I have had very good success with "Sea Foam". It keeps my carbs clear. ? It is a cleaner and gas stabilizer, so I use it all the time.

Pep boys and/or Walmart should have it.

I had the plugs changed a little less than 2 years ago. I will need to check the drain tube to the filter. Also, how do you use the seafoam. I've heard about it but never used it.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Intructions on the can. It just get put into the gas tank. A little goes a long way.

For immediate results, you can use it directly in the carburetors, feed it in through the fuel line.

It cleans vedry well, but if it is a blockage, you will have to manually take them apart and clean them.

Hi guys, I use SeaFoam as well, it's a great product.
You can usually find it at AutoZone (where I'm currently employed).
Just mix about 1/3 can to a full tank of gas it'll do it's magic.
I get around 35-40 mpg on my bike depending.... :D
