Great Site and Great Bikes!

Postby PhillyP on Fri Apr 18, 2008 10:40 am

Hello All!
I'm new to posting, but not to the site. I've been checking the site out since getting my '92 2 years ago. Great to see a dedicated nighthawk site with current people actually on it!!! These are great bikes, was riding it 57mi to work last season (I moved a bit closer this year though, only 34mi!!)
Anyway, I have read several posts on this site and other blogs regarding the starting and running issues associated with these bikes. Slow to warm up and dieing out under load while still cold. I've had the same experience with my bike but runs great after warm, this season is different. She starts up no problem and gets warm, but once in gear she dies out under the load. My thought is that it's fuel/carb related and needs to be cleaned out and she'll run me to and from work no prob all season.
I wondering if anyone has heard of or used Sea Foam?? I've read great praise for the stuff on other blogs, but I trust the fellow nighthawkers to give me a true opinion.

Update

Postby PhillyP on Mon Apr 21, 2008 10:00 am

Spent some cleaning up time with the bike this weekend and it's running great!! I guess it was just crappy gas. After a lil gas mouth rinse, I drained all the old crap and filled 1/2 the tank with premium, mixed in approx. 1/3 can of Sea Foam. It took a while for the bike to warm up, but once it did it ran perfect. I don't think it had much to do with the additive at all, just fresh gas. Either way, I'm happy and ready for this season!
Anyone suggest a good product for cleaning up small rust on metal parts??

Rust and Gas

Postby Bombadillow on Thu May 29, 2008 9:47 am

Hi, I'm new to both the Nighthawk and motorcycles and general, and I'm fairly new to this website. I recently bought a '91 NH CB750, and although I haven't ridden it yet myself, the buddy with me to help me out with the purchase says it looks like I got a great bike, and he couldn't believe the mileage we got taking it back home on 162 miles of mostly freeway (never had to dip into the reserve).

As to your rust removal question, I bought some Turtle Wax brand Chrome Cleaner and Rust Remover. I can't recommend it (yet), because I haven't yet tried it out, but I'll be sure to post again after I do.

You mentioned that you put premium in your tank to help get things back up to speed. I was wondering--how much of a difference to different grades of gas make to the NH? Would I be okay putting regular unleaded in, or would premium take better care of it?

Thanks!

I tend to get better mileage with premium and my head temp stays a little lower. Not sure if that really makes any difference but since I'm averaging 50mpg with my current driving style, I'll stick with the premium.
