Difference between '91 and '92 - '03 NH CB750?

Postby Bombadillow on Fri May 30, 2008 8:54 pm

About me: brand new to both motorcycling and to my beautiful 1991 Nighthawk CB750. I know very little about either, but I’m doing as much reading as I can to educate myself.

While searching for parts, mods and such, I often see items listed as for the ’92 CB750 and above. This confuses me, because I’ve read elsewhere that there are virtually no differences from the ’91 model all the way through the ’03 model (let alone from the ’91 to the ’92!)

Presently, I’ve been trying to find a hard case frame so that I can, well, add hard cases to my bike (I’ve looked at Chris Wright’s Givi mod, but apparently the Y146 CB750 Series type mount has been discontinued). I’ve found that Hepco-Becker (German) offers a mount and frame for the CB750, but there are two possible road blocks here: 1) It says it’s for the CB750 “sevenfifty” model. Does anyone know if this is the same as the CB750 Nighthawk that we know in the States? 2) It says that the frame/mount is for the ’92 CB750 (“sevenfifty” model) and up. Is there any reason why this wouldn’t fit my ’91?

Thanks, and here’s hoping someone can set me straight on all this!

I'm in the same boat as you are as I also have a 91. I have a set of soft bags now, but would like to upgrade to hard bags later. I'm probably going to make a set of frames once I find a set of hard bags I like that I can afford. When I do, I'll try to post some pics of the frames.

Frame for the NH

Postby Bombadillow on Sun Jun 01, 2008 4:17 pm

After scouring the Net all weekend, exchanging emails with folks and posting messages to forums (which people were very kind to respond to), I've got one or two possible solutions, and I've learned at least one new thing about the CB750.

Looking at photos of my '91 NH and another user's '92, I can tell you that there are no structural differences at all. When you see a reference to a product that will fit CB750s 92 and up, it's a reference to the European CB750 "sevenfifty" model. It looks a lot like the US Nighthawk, but there are some differences in the front and the back. Most of the frames I've found that fit the sevenfifty will not fit the NH because of the different tail piece on each.

After looking at the photos of Chris Wright's setup with the discontinued Givi Y146, it seems like the Givi Wingrack is the one rack (at least, that I've found) that would fit on both the European sevenfifty and the US Nighthawk, since it does affix to anywhere in the tail piece region.

Someone on another forum was nice enough to direct me to a British website that claims to still have the Y146 fitting kit in stock. The description of the product says that it's for the CB750 '92 to '00, but the manufacturer's item number (Y146) is the same as what us US Nighthawk owners used to have to look for.

It seems like there are plenty of sevenfifty frame and hard case solutions out there. Perhaps a few Y146s still exist in the European market. I've emailed that website to ask if they do, indeed, still have that item. If they reply back "yes," I'll order it witout hesitation and pass the info on to you here. The trick, after all, is to get the fitting kit. The Wingrack frame and the actual cases aren't going anywhere! Plus, the owner of Caribou Cases told me in an email that they expect to have an adaptor to hook up their cases to the Givi rack in a few months. If anything, the choices will just grow!

If you decide to build your frame, I'd be very interested to hear how you do it. After all, that might well turn out to be my only option. :)

I have the same issue.

One thing, the Euro 750 is the same chassis, but the bodywork is different. For instance, the shocks are covered on the top on ours. The Euro 750 does not have any plastic covering the shock bolt. In addition, there is a passenger handhold bolted to the bracket that is hidden behind the plastic. It bolts to the bracket where our plastic bolts to under the seat.

I believe we may have to drill some holes or cut away some of the plastic to make it fit.

I have the Hondaline rack on mine. I had to trim the edge of the plastic, under the rear of the seat, to allow clearance. I am willing to bet the Euro 750 doesn't need the trimming.

I'd love to get the front fork from a Euro 750 also. they use dual disks up front.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this. I have a 2000 Nighthawk I'd like to mount with hard cases and am seeing similar info. Any luck with your search for the fittings? Anyone else done this?

Thanks,
Shane.
