AIR FILTER advice

Postby Timbo on Wed Jan 14, 2009 10:16 pm

A Newbie here. I'm looking for advice on replacing my air filter. I found the OEM stock replacement for $30, I also found them cheaper on Ebay but my coworkers who ride have told me that I'm better off getting a K & N filter, which I've found for around $80.

If you've switched to a K&N, did it make a difference? I know the K&N will last a lot longer with maintenance than a paper OEM filter. Is it worth the expense?

If you know of a better price, I'd love to find out about that too.

Thanks . . . Timbo

Hey Timbo, I dont own a K&N for our bikes, so most of what I have to say is speculative.

The higher flowing filter is reported to cause some lean issues and a stage1 jet kit is recomended when you install one (stage3 if you have an aftermarket header as well).

Second issue is that our air boxes are designed to draw air through the filter from the outside. In other words, all the dust dirt and debris (I have found fairly large insects in mine) collected on the inside of that funny looking filter making cleaning the K&N unit a real nightmare.

If you do buy one, let us know what you think of it.

K&N Filters

I've had a K&N air filter on my '03 NH 750 for 3000 miles. I haven't noticed any difference in performance. I would recommend the K&N if you plan to keep your bike for more than 12000 miles after your filter change and if you don't mind the periodic maintenance.

I had put a k&N filter in my bike and i noticed a rather large improvement. I had also not cheked to see if there was anything in my air box before and i found that it was flooded. lol. But now i'm to remove my airbox and put on mini air filters that go on the ends of the carbs as well as a jet kit and vanes and hines pipe. Just have to figure out where my battery is gunna go.

And thats weird- I'm Mark from Indiana lol

God, I am so envious...

I have been wanting a Vance & Hines for a while now, even with my extreme "Hodge Mod" the bike is just too quiet.

Not only that, one of the baffle plates in my left muffler has broken free from the spot weld and rattles like a marble in a coffee can!

I am interested in any comments as well about the k&n filters and as far as the vance hines exhuast i bought my NH750 that already had this sweet sounding exhuast and i highly recommed these to anyone who wants thier nighthawk to have some sound. have gotten tons of compliments on how great it sounds and i aggree. some guys like thier bikes quiet and some want to be heard. personally i love the sound and love turning the heads. to each his own but if there is any question in your mind get them you will not regret it.
